Lauren Cage

AYA board member and sole proprietor of Magical Thinking

Lauren Cage is a Bay Area artist, designer and educator. Since 2012, she has worked in several educational roles for The Tech Museum of Innovation of San Jose, currently as the Gallery Programs Manager. She has previously held educator roles at the Children Discovery Museum of San Jose and David Owsley Museum of Art in Muncie, Indiana. Since 2015, Lauren and her fellow science educator/8th grade lab partner/best friend Erin Salter have been teaching project-based learning S.T.E.A.M. workshops as the Tinker Belles. Lauren has developed and taught girl-focused S.T.E.M. workshops at libraries and schools all over the Bay Area, including multiple workshops for the nationally recognized Make-HER series at Sunnyvale Library. Lauren is board member for the Alliance for Youth Achievement (formerly known as the Alum Rock Education Foundation), focused on pop-up S.T.E.A.M. projects, public art workshops and youth leadership. She holds an M.A. in Cultural Anthropology

Wayang Kulit: Indonesian Puppetry

To help celebrate the Mini Maker Faire, Lauren lead an exploration of Indonesian shadow puppetry with the guests of Barns & Noble. The Alum Rock Youth Leaders assisted guests with designing and creating their a rod-controlled shadow puppet. Guests then had the opportunity to tell their story on the puppet theater stage, all while exploring the science and art behind shadow play.
